WordPress Plugin Saturation aka Challenges Equal Opportunity
Loading
/

Not a lot happening on WooCommerce core aside from the fact that 6.5 RC came out. At this point I am guessing you know what’s coming, but it is obvious that this means the change to get in and do some testing. So make sure you are ready to go.

Plugin opportunities, growing or subsiding

I titled this WooBits, challenges equal opportunity.

Now, trust me, this is not some new and enlightening phrase. I have heard in off and on in the WordPress space, and, of course, long before I even knew WordPress existed. When you think it through, this is the bases for innovation.

So why do I bring this up? Last week I talked about alternatives for WooCommerce, or the lack of I should say. And though this may bit a bit redundant, I am taking that idea of touching briefly on the question of saturation. As with the Woo alternative insight, this one also has people on both sides of the fence asking and answering, is the plugin market saturated.

We can look at this a couple of ways.

First, Woo has a large piece of the eCommerce WordPress pie. There is that saturation.

Or, we take a plugin, like a form plugin, and wonder how in the world can someone create yet another one.

To work around this negative connotations, we can either build new and exciting features, such as WS Forms did with their plugin. Or we niche down to fill a specific niche or stand alone feature.

But we are in tech

To me these are all moot questions, as we look at the world around us and how transportation, space travel, medicine and everything else has changed and new solutions and products come out. It’s all about meeting those new challenges with new solutions. This can be done with an existing product, or a new one. In either case, if you are not aware of it, WordPress is evolving.

With WordPress we are entering the phase of opportunities that can be filled with, you know it, themes, plugins and extensions. Blocks have done this. Now the full site editor is doing this. Bringing new challenges, but opening new opportunities.

And it’s no different with WooCommerce. You have see how one-click checkout is evolving. Plus all the other aspects that are centric to eCommerce and online stores. You throw in the opportunities I just mentioned around WordPress, and it all blends together.

Myself, I have been in the WordPress space since 2007 and the Woo space since its inception in 2011. In that time alone I have seen a lot. And as many have said, we are just touching the tip of the iceberg.

So my advice to you. If you are wanting to build that next plugin for WordPress, find the opportunities and go forth. Nothing in life is guaranteed, nor is nothing in WordPress guaranteed. But you won’t know unless you have tried.
