Tumblr in the red, but…
Something not so builder focused per se, but Automattic is moving quite a few of its employees from Tumblr to other projects. Unfortunately the revenue that was anticipated didn’t happen. Kind of bums me out as I was getting use to diving into a bit of Tumblr here and there and even bought my domain bobwp.blog for it. To sum it up is a bit challenging, but the internal docs that were leaked, well, that is that. I wonder how many of those who shared that would like to have their internal docs publicly put out there?
Well, whatever the case, Matt did have a Q&A on Tumblr so if you are really interested in learning more, check that out. He also noted out of that support mechanism they put in that hasn’t worked out well. 2,300 subscribers so far (out of 11.5M monthly active users) have chipped in on support. Myself I have purchased checkmarks there, ad free account and most recently, yes a bit of support. So maybe things will change, who knows.
WordPress 6.4
In the world of WordPress, as you likely know 6.4 came out. I guess I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that. So I just did. And you will find plenty of posts about it here and there. Interestingly enough, when a major release comes out, I always love to watch all the contributors shake their feathers some. And that to me is well deserved. I think there was around 600 of them this time around. Same amount of people who were at WordCamp Madrid that I attended last week.
And yes, there was a bug that did some major Stripe issues that apparently is being worked out, or had been in the most recent update.
WordCamp Madrid
Speaking of WordCamp Madrid, it was an incredible event. The venue was so cool and really made it easy to visit vendors, network, eat, drink and enjoy the sessions. As a non-Spanish speaker, that was a different feel for me, but it’s a good learning experience and worth putting yourself into someone else’s shoes that experiences this. But the community is warm and inviting, and I had no problem finding those who put up with my English.
Black Friday
Oh, and there is Black Friday. I bet you haven’t been seeing anything about that. Here and over on BobWP I stopped doing lists of specials? Why? Well, there are enough as it is. Why reinvent the wheel. Of course, there are a ton to choose from. I always like to send some of my friends over to WP Builds list as it’s comprehensive and you can easily filter what you are looking for. But that’s not say there aren’t other good ones. Best thing to do if you are undecided is to head over to thewp.world/bfcm and you will find a list of lists. A bit meta but hey it works. And speaking of Black Friday, our new hosts Adam and Emma did a show earlier this week that you may want to catch.
Free vs. premium plugins
I also saw a nice little post from Marieke over on Post Status about free vs. premium plugins. That feeling that more and more builders are wanting to stick to releases of premium only plugins. And sure, we all get it, one has to make money. But she did reflect how the lack of quality free plugins may diminish and along with that the open source feelies we have. Interesting to see what the future holds. Might be some learning curves to be heard when we start our new show, Open Talk on Open Source.
Speaking of shows, make sure you visit our site and see what is up with all our new shows under the Do the Woo umbrella. Good times coming with out new site and other stuff. But I’ll save that for our Do the Woo news update.
The Woo brand
So closing out, as you know from a show that we did last week, WooCommerce.com has changed to Woo.com. Essentially as mentioned in that show, this is a company brand change and WooCommerce is still the open source plugin. But that didn’t stop the WordPress world from moaning and groaning about the change, or dissing Woo for a mistake made. Well, I stayed out of most of the conversations as to avoid fanning the fire. But hey, my thoughts is with any big brand change, it will all eventually work out and smooth out. And just to let you know, we are working to get someone on the show with a bit of a deeper dive into the brand change.
