Takeaways

  • Vast Content Archive: Bob notes that Open Channels FM now has around 4.4 million words across its posts and podcasts, making it a huge repository of insights and stories, equivalent to roughly 50 novels.
  • Easy to Miss Things: In both reading articles and listening to podcasts, it’s common to miss valuable content, whether due to distraction or simply not catching every detail the first time through, as Bob explains.
  • Value of Show Notes and Transcripts: Bob emphasizes the importance of providing show notes and full transcripts, as they help listeners and readers catch up on what they might have missed and find specific information more easily.
  • Powerful Search Tools: The site uses Jetpack AI Search, which Bob describes as more advanced than traditional search, mimicking modern browser search functionality for users seeking information.
  • Adding Site Chat for Deeper Discovery: Recently, Jetpack Site Chat was installed, allowing visitors to have conversations with the site’s content and get answers to questions rather than sifting through keywords, a feature Bob finds especially valuable with such a massive archive.

Bob Dunn:

Today, what can you learn from 4.4 million words? It’s an interesting question, a bit overwhelming, and you might be asking, oh, what’s the point, Bob? So I did an export of our site, and I asked our good friend Claude, well, maybe not a good friend, to give me a rough estimate of how many words were on all the pages and posts. Claude came back and shared that, yes, around 4.4 million words, roughly 50 novels, which the latter part is beside the point. Let me explain.

Articles and posts are bits and pieces that you may have missed in the content. You know, you might be looking for something in particular, or you may not even catch it, just like I said. The same happens when you’re listening to a podcast. It might even be easier to miss something due to a distraction, your mind wandering, zoning out, who knows. You may snap out of it and ask, wait, what was that middle part there? And with any site that has a podcast, or a number of them, those moments can easily grow, or by simply not listening, you might miss it. But hey, we all move on.

We can help with this by creating show notes, like I’ve done, that give you takeaways or other content. And of course, there’s always the transcription, but with longer episodes, that equates to longer transcriptions, so you might skim over it. By the way, on a side note, I’m glad I’ve had transcripts done on all the episodes. It made it easier for Claude to count them. Kind of back to that.

But what I really want to share is having the ability to search all of this content. First off, I want to let you know we use Jetpack AI Search. It is really better than standard search. It mimics the way browsers now present search results. So that’s pretty cool. But taking it one step further, we recently installed Jetpack Site Chat on our site.

Now, before I get into that, going back to what I was talking about, I often thought of all the knowledge, insights, and expertise that are in our 800+ episodes. And yes, a couple hundred or more blog posts. It would be crazy mad finding those tidbits in those. But when I first had the idea of a Site Chat, it was quite a while ago. I won’t even tell you. But of course, AI has evolved, tools have grown, on and on and on, blah blah blah. Now I’ve talked about it off and on over the months and finally nailed it with Jetpack’s Site Chat. And you know what? It’s really pretty freaking cool. It’s not just a search, it’s a conversation based on what you have found or are looking for. Questions, not keywords.

Now I can just see you, although I really can’t see you. I can see you in my head, but never mind. You are wanting to say to me, hey Bob, what’s freaking new about this? Those are everywhere. True. But you don’t realize what it can give you until you see what a site with, and I’ll go back to that, 4.4 million words, mostly conversations from over 600 individuals, can bring to you. Perspective, personality, human thoughts, and a lot of them. Suddenly a site like ours becomes what some may decide is a useful resource center where you can just ask a question.

Now, to get serious, although none of this has been a joke, this is what the open web and open source have thrived on. I haven’t produced all these podcasts for the single reason of giving you something to listen to. Sure, they’re there, you do it. I also want to thank you for what I have given you, again, in knowledge, expertise, and hopefully a lot of food for thought.

I’ll end it with this. Since our episodes are filled with personality, who knows what you might learn? Our hosts, Zach Stepek and Carl Alexander, have done many episodes together. And Zach tested it out, decided to ask who was the funniest between the two of them? Well, I’m not going to ruin it for Zach. I’ll have you listen to their next episode when those two will give you the answer.

Well, I hope you check it out on our site. You find that wonderful little AI star in the bottom left corner. You’ve seen them all over. Now you see them here, and you can see what you can learn today.
