If you manage a brand or work in content marketing, you’ve probably obsessed over view counts on your latest video campaign. The bigger the number, the better, right? Not in all cases.

In a recent episode of Content Sparks’ Upload Worthy series, Christian Taylor and Adam Weeks dig deep into what actually defines “success” in video marketing.

The View Count Trap

It’s easy to celebrate when a video racks up thousands of views, especially in spaces like SaaS, WordPress products, or other niche B2B fields. But Christian and Adam are quick to caution: “Your view counter doesn’t know if it’s the head of a major agency watching, or just some kid.” Simply put: not all clicks are created equal.

For niche products, even a couple thousand views can be massively impactful if those eyes belong to the right people. As Adam points out, being on stage in front of 140 decision makers at a conference could be more valuable than 10,000 generic YouTube impressions.

Conversions, Not Just Conversations

The pair also discuss the nuances between brand awareness and conversions. Yes, integrating your product into popular “overview” videos is great for reach, but it’s rarely a silver bullet for sales. Videos designed for conversions such as detailed comparisons or how-tos, may have lower view counts, but they often attract buyers who are ready to act.

“Content that’s designed around conversions is going to get less views but attract the right type of person,” Christian notes. “Brand awareness content will get more views, but those viewers might only be window shopping.”

Why ‘Slow-Burn’ Videos Can Still Win

As a fun twist, Christian shares real-life examples where videos that initially flopped went on to become top-performers years later. Brands looking for overnight ROI sometimes overlook the long-tail impact of video especially on platforms like YouTube, where older videos can suddenly become popular.

Setting Expectations

Both speakers agree: Brands and creators need to talk honestly about what “results” mean. If you expect to instantly flood your checkout page after one sponsorship, you’re bound to be disappointed. But if you value quality impressions, the cumulative power of repetition, and the eventual snowball effect, video can pay off in spades.

The TL;DR for Brands

  • Know Your Goals: Be clear whether you’re chasing awareness, conversions, or both.
  • Look Beyond the View Count: Niche, “low-view” videos can be your real moneymakers.
  • Think Long-Term: Today’s slow starter could be tomorrow’s viral hit.
  • Measure Holistically: Impressions are nice, but what really matters is who’s watching and what they do next.
