The Evolution of the Do the Woo Friday Show

Well, it’s Friday and what do we have here? The Friday show. Quite the ring to it, huh. Seriously this is not permanent nor is it referring to a given name for the episode on Friday’s. In fact, remember WooBits? It wasn’t that long ago this show was WooBits. It has some history as I have talked about before. But hey, let me recap that.

It started as bits of Woo news. After that it moved into more of a topical commentary by myself. But as things transpired here, I felt it need more than me just blabbing away. So back around the first of the year I shared  the new approach for WooBits. What followed were three shows that debuted this new concept. And that is having a guest co-host join me each week to talk something about WooCommerce and WordPress. Or tech topics that would interest Woo builders, directly or indirectly. As a result I had a chat with David Bisset on social platforms, Mark Westguard on AI and Nathan Wrigley on page builders to start getting a feel for this show.

Names are hard

Do you know what I did prior to recording what you are hearing right now. I spent time creating a podcast called WooBits is now Do the Woo Press. Before you hit that stop button hear me out as there is a point to all of this. After putting it together and recording, well, something just didn’t quite feel right. For a couple hours prior to even doing the post I spent time thinking of a new name for this Friday show. Why? Because it needed to be a bit more generalized with the direction I want to go with it.

Then I proceeded to spend another two hours thinking of a new names. Oh and what fun did I have. RandomWP. This didn’t take me long to toss aside as I thought Matt Medeiros and Brad Williams might sue me for stealing that name from the defunct podcast that may or may not rear it’s head again. Then I thought of FractalWP. This came to me from something Beau Lebens on a recent podcast said about his first impression of WooCommerce. Well, that led to me reading more about fractals on Wikipedia and thus starting at videos and gifs that explored fractals. After awhile I felt I was back in the 70’s. And although I was finding an obscure way of comparing the people and community of WordPress, then drilling it down into WooCommerce, to the nature of fractals, there were certain aspects that didn’t quite make sense to me.

Then I thought of WooUnplugged. But the fact that Eric Clapton has completely gone wacko, and he was the first to use that on an album, didn’t set well with me. Also the point that it didn’t make much sense.

I came up with a few more that I cannot even remember now, so you can guess they must have been pretty impactful.

By the way, you may be wondering what turned me off on Do the Woo Press. At first it seemed right. But it’s been there and done. Also, it sounded too news like. I think somewhere in my pre-name search I just became frustrated and tried to make it sound good to myself.

Well, with all of that said, enough about my disillusioned journey into creating a name.

So why am I telling you all of this? First, in order to be transparent, sometimes I like to share the thinking behind the process I do here, as crazy as it may seem from the outside looking in. Also, it’s a good lead into the Friday Show, where WooBits has gone and what we are doing, moving forward as of today.

As I shared in my brief WooBits history, I do know what I want to do on Friday’s which is what I had planned most recently. And that is to have a guest co-host join me each week, with both of us bringing in a topic of the week to talk about. This could be WooCommerce or WordPress specific. Or maybe a little more generalized ecommerce. Or perhaps, some other touchpoint in tech. Whatever we talk about should be of interest to you, the Woo builder, whether it is directly or indirectly WooCommerce related. An added note here. Co-hosts do not need to be a Woo builder specifically, but that is an advantage. What you do need to do is have some relationship with Woo builders, either sites, products or services. In other words a touchpoint with WooCommerce.

But most of all it should be about what Do the Woo stands for. Elevating voices in the builder community and having a good time while doing it. So if you are interested in coming on the Friday show you can visit dothewoo.io/fridayshow to learn more. And I swear that I will find a better name soon. Because hey, that is really the best I can do? The Friday Show? Yikes. No matter the name, I can assure you that you will have a good time sharing some insights of your own to our community of listeners.

What about WooBits?

Okay, I admit, the life that name has led makes it obvious that I like it, and don’t want to give it up. As a result, it will be the name of my the newsletter I am bringing back to life here at Do the Woo. If you are interested in that, you can subscribe here.
