More Code, More Problems? What AI-Generated Software Means for Us

AI tools make it ridiculously easy to turn ideas into working apps. Anyone can sketch out a concept and get a prototype up and running fast. So, with all this instant software, why aren’t we drowning in amazing new apps?

Here’s the catch. Writing code used to be the biggest obstacle if you wanted something built, you needed cash, skills, and time. Now that this process is super simple, that obstacle has moved. The hard part isn’t building things anymore, it’s deciding what’s actually worth building.

Our sponsors keeps our network independent and actively publishing.

Since 2005, Automattic has built tools for the open web including WordPress.com, WooCommerce, and Jetpack that are used by millions of people to create, sell, and publish online. They believe in ownership, flexibility, and open source and we’re grateful for their support. Learn more at automattic.com.

Just because we can churn out tons of apps doesn’t mean they’ll be useful. Judging what really matters, understanding what users actually need, and having the guts to skip the rest. That stuff can’t be automated. More code means a bigger flood of options, but also a lot more mediocrity.

As software creation becomes routine, the real advantage shifts to knowing what truly matters and what people want to use. We have to swap “Can I make this?” for tougher questions. “Should anyone care?” “Can I trust it?” “Does it actually solve a real problem?”

It’s not about flooding the world with new apps, it’s about building smarter from the idea stage up.
